Indigestion is something so many people will go to the doctor for to relieve the condition because it is important to keep the entire gastrointestinal tract as a comfortable as possible in order to keep it running efficiently. Unfortunately many Americans tend to turn to questionable OTC drugs and are prescribed medications in order to combat their discomfort of chronic indigestion. Gastrointestinal drugs has increased dramatically in recent years where as one in ten Americans were prescribed at least one gastrointestinal drug on an outpatient basis in 2007, compared with one in fifteen in 1997. These medications often do more harm than good by masking imbalance that can lead to more serious conditions. These drugs, such as Zantac, also causes many side effects such an increased risk of bone fractures and increased risk of infections even. However the big pharmaceutical companies have a drug for everything today and people are all to impatient and want an immediate remedy.

Discomfort or burning in the upper abdomen is often associated with overeating which is something Americans are all to happy to do. This type of indigestion usually disappears without treatment but an immediate logical remedy would be to quit over eating! This is not likely to happen, there by simply seating slower will help combat indigestion. As well, just by avoiding foods that cause indigestion would be miraculous for the chronic sufferer. Avoiding spicy foods would be an example. Sometimes this just is not enough, however something so simple as drinking a few gulps of pickle juice would do the trick. Pickle juice, or vinegar, neutralizes the acids in the stomach! Even exercises are proven to reduce chronic indigestion. Just some basic simple lifestyle changes is all one might need. Mints are another proven reliever. This could be in the form of tea, gum, or even candies. This is an excellent way to sooth the stomach and has been a long time remedy for centuries even.

Mild or even chronic indigestion has attracted all of the major drug companies and have deem the condition as "needed treatment". This is absolutely ridiculous. It has only been in recent times with processed and modern foods that indigestion has come to issue. In the dark ages men and women could easily eat wild fox raw without suffering any ill effects, and if they did, they would satiate themselves with something as basic as an artichoke or mint leaf or some other type of extract. Naturally if abdominal pain or other symptoms happen along with indigestion, such as chronic diarrhea or constantly belching up foods, do see a doctor. However indigestion is simply an uncomfortable feeling that is 100 percent avoidable.
